The AI Feature API allows you to assess the impact of wind and hail via the Wind/Hail Risk score. The sections below explain how this score is calculated and how it should be interpreted.
Wind/Hail Risk Score
The Wind/Hail Risk Score is a 1-5 score (also known as a "claim predictor") that measures the likelihood of experiencing a wind or hail claim. A score of 1 represents the highest likelihood of filing a wind or hail claim, and a score of 5 represents the lowest likelihood.
The score combines Nearmap's Wind Risk Score and Hail Risk Score into a single combined risk assessment. Each of these component scores integrates property-level vulnerability with FEMA-based hazard frequency data from the FEMA National Risk Index model.
The Wind/Hail Risk Score provides a comprehensive view of a property's overall exposure to both wind and hail perils, making it useful for portfolios where both perils are significant concerns.
The Wind/Hail Risk Score is calculated in real time using a machine learning model. For this reason, it is omitted from the API response by default and comes with a latency cost when requested on the API.

The Wind/Hail Risk Score is only available in the USA because it requires FEMA National Risk Index hazard frequency data for both wind and hail.
Wind/Hail Risk Score
The Wind/Hail Risk Score combines the individual Wind Risk Score and Hail Risk Score into a single comprehensive risk assessment.
Component scores
- Wind Risk Score: Combines Wind Vulnerability (building characteristics) with FEMA wind hazard frequency
- Hail Risk Score: Combines Hail Vulnerability (building characteristics) with FEMA hail hazard frequency
Combined score
- The Wind/Hail Risk Score integrates both component risk scores to predict the overall likelihood of experiencing either a wind or hail claim
- A score of 1 indicates highest likelihood of filing a wind or hail claim
- A score of 5 indicates lowest likelihood of filing a wind or hail claim
Interpretation
The Wind/Hail Risk Score provides a holistic view of a property's exposure to both wind and hail perils:
- High combined risk (scores 1-2): Property has high likelihood of experiencing either a wind or hail claim. This could be due to high hazard for both perils, high vulnerability for both, or a combination.
- Moderate combined risk (score 3): Property has moderate likelihood of experiencing a wind or hail claim. This is the typical baseline risk level.
- Low combined risk (scores 4-5): Property has low likelihood of experiencing either a wind or hail claim. This could be due to low hazard for both perils, low vulnerability for both, or a combination.
Model input features
The Wind/Hail Risk Score uses only two inputs:
windRiskScore: The individual Wind Risk Score (1-5). This score already combines wind vulnerability with FEMA wind hazard frequencyhailRiskScore: The individual Hail Risk Score (1-5). This score already combines hail vulnerability with FEMA hail hazard frequency
These component risk scores are calculated first, then combined using a model to produce the final Wind/Hail Risk Score. The modelInputFeatures object in the response provides transparency into which component scores were used.
Geographic applicability
The Wind/Hail Risk Score is applicable to buildings in the United States where FEMA National Risk Index data provides both wind and hail hazard frequency information.
The score requires FEMA hazard data for both wind and hail. If either component is missing, the Wind/Hail Risk Score will not be available.
Peril applicability
The Wind/Hail Risk Score applies to both non-hurricane wind and hail perils. It applies to:
- Thunderstorm winds
- Tornadoes
- Severe weather wind events
- Straight-line winds
- Hailstorms
- Combined wind and hail events
It does not apply to:
- Hurricane wind damage (use Hurricane Vulnerability Score instead)
- Flood damage
- Other non-wind/non-hail perils
Regulatory Approvals
The Wind/Hail Risk Score and associated rate factors are filed with U.S. regulatory authorities and approved for use in insurance rating in specific states.
For detailed information on regulatory approvals, SERFF filing numbers, and approved rate factors, contact your Nearmap account representative.
Parcel Mode Behavior
For property based analysis, parcelMode=true is recommended. For information about the AI Feature API's behavior when parcelMode=true is included in the request. For more information, see Parcel Mode.
