These instructions apply to ArcMap® 10.2.2 in Esri® ArcGIS® for Desktop, and describe how to load JPG and JGW files exported from Nearmap without losing their georeferencing information. Note that the JPG and JGW filenames (except for their extensions) must be identical and in the same folder. This allows the software to load the JGW automatically when you load the JPG.
IMPORTANT: If you are using a supported projection, you can simply export in that projection and then drag and drop the image into the map frame or Table of Contents. If you are not using a supported projection, you need to set the projection. Follow the steps below.
- Open ArcCatalog.
- In the Catalog Tree, navigate to the filename of the JPG you wish to import, right-click the filename, and click Properties.
- Scroll down to the Spatial Reference section and click Edit...
You will need to set this for the projection your JPG and JGW were downloaded in. This is indicated at the start of the JPG filename. If it's 3785, search for "3857" which is the equivalent. - Select the corresponding coordinate system, click OK, and click OK again to close the Raster Dataset Properties window.
- Open ArcMap.
- Right-click Layers and select Properties...
- Switch to the Coordinate System tab.
- Search for and select the local projection you would like your map to be in, then click OK. If the JPG was already in your desired coordinate system, this step is unnecessary.
- If a Create Pyramids window appears, click Yes.
- Your image should appear, in which case, your image import is complete and you can stop here. If you have changed the projection, a tilt will usually appear in the image.
- If the image has not appeared and you instead get a Geographic Coordinate Systems Warning, make certain that the JPG and JGW filenames match precisely and that they are in the same directory. If you still receive this window, click Transformations...
- In the Using field, select which series of map transformations to use to get from the WGS84 datum to your datum of interest., then click OK and Close the Geographic Coordinate Systems Warning window. After that, you should see your map appear.
