Nearmap Obliques for ArcGIS provides you with a customizable oblique viewer which you can use to view and measure off Nearmap oblique content.
Before you Start
NOTE: Access to this widget requires a subscription to Nearmap Oblique for ArcGIS. Talk to your Nearmap Account Manager for more information.
To use the widget, you need access to your organization's ArcGIS Portal.
You can use the widget via ArcGIS Portal on your desktop, tablet or smart phone.
NOTE: It is important to remember that you cannot save any dimensions or text that you add to your view. Once you close the widget or navigate to another photo, those measurements are gone.
Once the widget has been installed and configured by your administrator, you can perform the following tasks.
Launch the Widget
- You may need to click on the widget icon to launch it.
- This opens the widget window that also contains all your controls.
Change Location
To change location:
- Click the Marker button.
- Click a location on the main map.
When you click a location outside of the current photo, the photo containing the new location loads.
IMPORTANT: Changing location is the only way to view a different photo in the widget window.
Zoom and Pan
Both on the widget window and on the main 2D map, you can zoom in out, and pan around using your mouse, screen or trackpad. (These actions as the same as those described for the Nearmap MapBrowser and are detailed here: Zooming, Panning and Rotating Your View in MapBrowser.) The zoom level and location in the widget window will match that of the main 2D map.
In the widget viewer you can only zoom and pan on the current photo.
If you want to view beyond the current photo in the widget viewer, use the Marker tool.
You can zoom out in the widget window until the entire photo fits into the window. You cannot zoom out any further than this.
Show Oblique Photo Boundary on the Main 2D Map
The boundary drawn on the main map is the boundary of the photo. In the widget window you can only see within the constraints of that tile.
To turn off the photo boundary display, toggle the Hide photo extent button.
Change Photo Date
By default you see the most recent imagery. You can change the date of the imagery you are viewing in one of two ways:
- By clicking the right-hand arrow to view more recent imagery and the left hand-arrow to view older imagery
- By clicking on the date itself then selecting one of the imagery dates.
NOTE: This doesn't change the vintage of the main 2D map.
Change Photo Orientation
You can view the image from different orientations, for example, to better place your measurements.
When taking measurements with the widget, you effectively toggle measurement mode on or off. You know you're in measurement mode when the width or height button is highlighted.
Measure height
- Change your orientation if you need to get a better view of the geometry you are measuring.
- Click the Measure height button.
You are now in height measurement mode. Your cursor changes to a circle. - Click once to start the measurement, double-click to end the measurement.
The dimension displays along the measurement line, provided you are zoomed in enough for it to fit.
Edit a height line
You can change a height measurement line by:
- moving it to another location
- elongating or shortening it.
- Click the Measure height button.
- Click either end of an existing height line.
- Now you can drag the line around to reposition it or drag the end of the line to either extend or shorten it.
Measure width
You measure width in much the same way as you measure height:
- First click the Measure width button.
You are now in width measurement mode. - The cursor does not change like it does when you measure height.
- Draw your measurement line by single-clicking at the beginning and double-clicking at the end.
Edit a width line
You can change a width measurement line by:
- elongating or shortening it
- adding a bend in the line
- changing the angle of the line or line segment
- Click the Measure width button.
2a. To add a bend, click anywhere on the line and drag in the direction you want it to bend.
2b. To extend or shorten a line, click the end of an existing width line and drag.
2c. To change the angle of a line or line segment, click the end of the line and drag it to where you want it.
Delete a measurement
You can remove any measurement by following these steps:
- Exit measurement mode by making sure no measurement buttons are on.
- Click on the measurement line.
- From the popup, press the trash can button.
Copy measurement text
You can copy any measurement by following these steps:
- Exit measurement mode by making sure no measurement buttons are on.
- Click on the measurement line.
- From the popup, press the copy button.
- A dialog informs you that the copy was successful. Press OK.
The dimension is copied to your clipboard.
Annotate
You can annotate your photo by adding text directly.
- Click the Text button.
Your cursor changes to a red dot. - Place the dot where you want your text to appear.
- A dialog opens. Enter your text.
- Press the Tick button to save and exit the dialog.
Delete annotation text
To delete an annotation:
- Make sure no buttons are toggled on.
- Click the blue dot below the annotation. The annotation dialog pops up. Click the trash can button.
NOTE: Remember that you cannot save any dimensions or text that you add to your view. Once you close the widget, those measurements are gone.
