Discoloration from algae, other microorganisms, exhaust, or leaks
Short Term Implications
Most staining is a cosmetic issue, such as areas of darkness on a shingle roof. However in the case of residues from corrosive exhaust/leaks it can lead to further problems down the road. In such instances it should be cleaned up regularly.
Long Term Implications
Even cosmetic staining on roofs can be an indicator of a roof's age and as such can be worth noting. More corrosive stains if not cleaned up regularly can deteriorate building components leading to damages.
