What are Worn Shingles?
As asphalt shingles age, the deterioration (or wear & tear) over time can manifest in several ways. They might lose their protective granules, get curled edges, or even develop ridges, although we normally are only able to identify granule loss. While every roof loses granules from the beginning of its installation, by the time such granule loss becomes visible on aerial imagery, it is in an advanced state that indicates the roof has significant wear.
What are NOT Worn Shingles?
Short Term Implications
A roof with worn shingles may be at or near the end of its useful life. Aged shingle roofs are more likely to develop leaks than newer roofs and are also more susceptible to damage from storms. Such roofs should be considered for replacement before the roof fails completely.
Long Term Implications
If ignored, a roof with worn shingles will age into the point that it is beyond its useful life. When this occurs, leaks are not only possible but actually expected, leading to deterioration of the internal building components. Additionally, it could be susceptible to damage even from more moderate storms.
