Nearmap Sync Server Configuration

Has anyone been able to get Nearmap Sync set up?

We are trying to follow the Server Configuration guide that is here https://help.nearmap.com/kb/articles/1699-server-configuration and we have a new install of ArcGIS Enterprise 11.3 that is federated and we're toying with the idea of adding an ArcGIS Web Adaptor onto a Web Server that is in the DMZ, but we're unsure if that has to be a Web Adaptor for Portal or Server as the documentation is unclear.
